ReFocus Preset Risk Engineering Values

To assist with setup, some common risk engineering values have defaults pre-set. By understanding these preset values, you can easily modify to fit your organization.

What Risk Engineering rules does ReFocus come with 'out of the box'?

Preset Risk Engineering values are the standard answers ReFocus can use when a required field does not have a value.

For example, if a carrier asks how many years a customer has lived at their current residence, and that information is missing, ReFocus can use a preset instead of leaving the field blank.

Presets help:

  • Reduce manual data entry
  • Keep quotes moving when information is incomplete
  • Improve consistency across users and carriers
  • Give your agency a starting point that can be adjusted over time

💡 Note: Presets are only used when ReFocus does not already have the needed information or when your agency has not configured a more specific rule. They can be modified at any time.

Home Quoting presets

The following presets may be used when ReFocus is completing a home insurance quote and certain customer or property information is missing.

Policy and residence information

Effective date

  • If the current policy expires within 4 months, ReFocus uses that expiration date.

  • If the policy expires more than 4 months from today, ReFocus uses a start date 30 days from today.

Years at residence

  • If this information is missing, ReFocus assumes the customer has lived at the current address for more than 3 years.

Home purchase date

  • If the purchase date is unavailable, the preset value is five years.

Dwelling type and occupancy

  • If not specified, the ReFocus preset value is Owner Occupied – Primary

Mailing address

  • If a separate mailing address is not provided, ReFocus assumes the mailing address is the same as the home address.

Property and roof information

Roof shape

  • If the roof shape is unknown, ReFocus presets to Gable, Moderate Pitch

Hail resistance

  • If hail resistance information is not provided, ReFocus assumes No

Roof replacement year

  • If the roof replacement year is unknown and the home is more than 15 years old, ReFocus assumes the roof was replaced 10 years ago.

  • If the home is less than 15 years old, ReFocus assumes there has not been a roof replacement.

Fire sprinkler

  • ReFocus presets to No

Insurance history and mortgage information

Current property insurance

  • ReFocus assumes the customer currently has property insurance.

  • If the current carrier is unknown or is not available in the carrier’s list, ReFocus selects the closest available option, such as:

    • Other Standard
    • Carrier Not Listed Above

Years of continuous property insurance

  • If this information is missing, ReFocus assumes 5 years

Cancellations and non-renewals

  • If not specified, ReFocus assumes there have been no cancellations or non-renewals in the past 5 years.

Loss and claims history

  • If claims information is not provided, ReFocus assumes Zero claims

Mortgage or financial interest

  • ReFocus assumes a mortgage or financial interest exists when required for quoting.

  • By preset, ReFocus assumes one mortgage and completes the required mortgage details when available.

  • Additional financial interests are not assumed unless they are provided in the customer record.

Trampolines and animals

  • If not specified, ReFocus assumes there is:

    • No trampoline
    • No livestock on the property

Home coverage presets

Coverage matching

  • When coverage information is available, ReFocus tries to match the customer’s current coverage limits and deductibles as closely as possible.

  • If an exact option is not available from the carrier, ReFocus selects the closest higher available option.

Coverage A — Dwelling

  • If Coverage A is already filled in by the carrier quoting system, ReFocus leaves it unchanged.

  • If Coverage A is blank, ReFocus uses the carrier’s replacement cost tool with default inputs.

Coverage B, C, and D

If the carrier quoting system already provides values for:

  • Other Structures
  • Personal Property
  • Loss of Use

ReFocus does not modify those values unless your agency has configured a specific rule.

Liability, medical payments, and deductibles

  • If coverage data is available for the customer’s current policy, ReFocus uses that information.

  • If not, ReFocus uses the preset option.

Auto Quoting presets

The following presets may be used when ReFocus is completing an auto insurance quote and certain customer, driver, vehicle, or coverage information is missing.

Policy and address information

Effective date

  • If the customer’s current auto policy expires within 4 months, ReFocus uses that expiration date.

  • If the policy expires more than 4 months from today, ReFocus uses a start date 30 days from today.

Garage address

  • If the garage address is unknown, ReFocus assumes it is the same as the customer’s mailing address.

Years at residence

  • If this information is missing or listed as 0, ReFocus assumes the customer has lived at the current address for more than 3 years.

Co-applicant

  • Unless a co-applicant is clearly provided, ReFocus selects No

  • Drivers are handled separately.

Driver information

Driver list

  • ReFocus includes all drivers found in the customer record.

  • If an expected driver is missing from the carrier quote form, ReFocus adds the driver when the necessary information is available.

License status and details

  • If not specified, ReFocus assumes the driver’s license status is Active

  • License numbers are entered when available in the customer record.

  • If this information is missing, ReFocus assumes the driver was first licensed at 16 years old

  • If the education level is not provided, ReFocus assumes a Bachelor’s degree

Telematics program

  • Unless the customer’s current policy clearly indicates participation in a telematics program, ReFocus selects No

Violations and claims

Claims and violations

  • If claims or violations are available in the customer record, ReFocus enters them as provided.

  • If no claims or violations are available, ReFocus answers incident-related questions as No

Unknown violation details

When violation details are incomplete, ReFocus uses the following presets:

  • Violation type: Non-Chargeable
  • Resulted in bodily injury or death: No
  • Incident dispute: No

Comprehensive losses

  • Comprehensive losses, such as hail, fire, theft, vandalism, towing, or other non-collision losses, are entered in the comprehensive section when available.

  • They are not entered as violations.

Vehicle information

Vehicle handling

  • If vehicles are already listed in the carrier system, ReFocus reviews and updates those vehicles.

  • ReFocus does not add additional vehicles unless the carrier form is blank or the workflow requires it.

  • If no vehicles are present, ReFocus adds all vehicles from the customer record when the necessary information is available.

Preset vehicle assumptions

  • If the carrier system has pre-filled values, ReFocus leaves those values unchanged unless the customer record provides a replacement value or your agency has configured a specific rule.

Policy-level coverages

  • Policy-level coverages are matched to the customer’s existing policy when known.

  • If no coverage data is available, ReFocus uses the values pre-filled by the carrier system.

Reviewing and updating presets

Your agency can review these preset values and decide whether they fit your quoting standards.

To learn how to adjust and set your own risk engineering values, check out this Knowledge Base article on Risk Engineering Rules: presets, Rules, and Nested Rules

You may want to update presets when:

  • Your agency has a preferred standard value
  • A carrier or state commonly uses different options
  • A line of business requires a different assumption
  • Your team wants ReFocus to handle missing information differently

💡 Tip: Presets are a starting point. If your agency needs more specific logic, such as different values based on carrier, state, coverage, or customer type, Rules or Nested Rules may be a better fit.
